The Tigné Point project is Malta’s largest mixed-use development and spearheads the regeneration of this area, which is opposite Valletta across Marsamxett Harbour. It provides apartments, offices, retail and community facilities in a vibrant mix of traditional and contemporary architecture and includes the restoration of the historic Fort Tigné and its barracks.
Client MIDI plc appointed GMW, together with agents Colliers CRE, as consultants for the internal layout and design of the retail mall with the brief of ensuring that it met the highest international standards.
The three-storey retail mall is arranged around a spacious atrium that focuses activity, creating buzz and excitement.
A planning condition for the development was the retention on site of the football pitch of local team, Sliema Wanderers. This pitch is now sited on top of the retail mall and, as it effectively occupies the whole roof and two of the three retail levels are below ground, there is little opportunity to bring daylight into the building. To engender a more natural feel to the retail environment, a computer-controlled lighting programme simulates changing levels of daylight in the atrium.
The Point
GMW Architects was retail consultant and interior designer for The Point, the 28,000 square metre shopping mall at the centre of the regeneration project at Fort Tigné. The Point is the first modern shopping mall on the island and the larger units offer international retailers the chance to be represented in Malta for the first time.
