One of GMW’s strengths is providing architectural and interior design services for clients whose requirements transcend national boundaries and, in particular, for multi-national companies pursuing European or global roll-out programmes.

An example of this is Discovery Communications, for whom we have completed more than ten projects across Europe. These are based on a ‘boutique office’ concept that gives each office a strong connection with its home market. The underlying infrastructure is much the same in each location, while the design of the space develops in a way that reflects the local culture and business practice.

Among these projects is the Discovery Communications Benelux office in Amsterdam. It is in the Kraanspoor, a 280m long, three-storey glass box supported by concrete legs above Amsterdam’s Oslofjord. This building has a strong identity of its own and offered a fantastic opportunity.

The fit out takes its cue from its striking host and complements the architecture rather competing with it. It builds on elements such as the exposed concrete ceilings and active double-skin facade, to create a workplace of cool sophistication.

As you enter the office, the first space you encounter is the open kitchen and coffee area – a focus for meeting and eating with visitors and colleagues alike. Beyond this, a post-production suite is visible through a curved glass partition exposing the craft of programme production, the essence of Discovery’s business.

A stylish conference room with cleverly integrated audio-visual equipment provides a venue for showcasing Discovery’s broadcast channels in a ‘surround-sound’ environment.

Elsewhere, the open-plan office space is interspersed with informal areas and ‘free-standing’ meeting rooms. The result is an impression of calm collaboration and creativity.

A similar mix of spaces makes up each of the other fit outs for Discovery, but each is an expression of the local culture and, to an extent, the personalities of the people who make up the business. The concept relies on a design that is culturally relevant, without being stereotypical.

To deliver projects in such diverse locations, GMW collaborates with fellow members of the European Architects Alliance (EAA), a consortium of design practices with some 20 offices in locations across Europe.

Discovery Channel

The design of each of the ten plus fit-out projects we have undertaken for Discovery Channel Europe has been based on a concept of consistent infrastructure provision. However, these are not uniform rollouts of standardized design. Each project absorbs the local culture and reflects the character of Discovery’s staff.
